FAMILY BIKE RIDE

16/06/2010

Raising funds for local charities

Woodbank Park once again hosted the Vernon Family Bike Ride, the third time the annual event has been held. Vernon staff, in conjunction with Stockport Council and Stockport Community Cycle Club encouraged entrants to saddle up and raise money for charity. The event coincided with National Bike Week which is the UK's nationwide campaign to increase participation in cycling.

The majority of entrants succeeded in completing 10 laps of the 1km circuit. Volunteers from Stockport Community Cycle Club were on hand to supervise the track and they also provided a cycle skills course. For those wishing to get their bike checked before riding there was also free bike maintenance checks provided by 'Dr. Bike' - Simon from Woodsons Cycles of Edgeley.

All ages joined in and many used the event to raise funds for charity. One participant, Peter Ellis from Ashton-under-Lyne, set himself an extra challenge by cycling to and from his home as well as completing two lots of the 10km course. He completed 48km in total and in the process raised over £400 for local charities.

Michael Hanson, Chief Executive at the Vernon Building Society said: “We are delighted to work with Stockport Council in promoting cycling in the community. With the increasing cost of petrol and the congested state of our roads, cycling is a great way to travel whilst getting fit and saving money.”

All 92 people who completed the 10km were entered into a prize draw to win a bike. The lucky winner was Lisa Goddard who will receive a brand new bike worth £200.

In today's climate it is so nice to see a business that still uses common sense. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Vernon.
