Stockport is on the Up

5th July 2022

Our home town has been named as one of the best up-and-coming areas to live and invest.

At the Vernon, we're proud of our home town. We've always known Stockport as a fantastic place to live, work and visit, but it's great to see recent local investments paying off. The Sunday Times has given a glowing recommendation of our borough, after naming it in its 'best and up and coming areas to invest in' list for 2022.

The newspaper named the town in its annual list, which was published on Sunday, June 19.

The article went on to say:

"It’s partly by accident that Manchester’s most interesting people desert the increasingly corporate city centre to outer suburbs in search of family houses, fresh air and better places than Piccadilly Gardens to walk the dog.

“It’s also part of a plan, championed by the Manchester mayor Andy Burnham to create town centres good enough to rival the city, with the same quality of homes and amenities, but at much lower prices."

Council Leader Mark Hunter said: “These are really exciting times for Stockport. All this investment will boost the growth of the town centre, which will, in turn, create modern, innovative spaces that will celebrate the town’s rich history and unique character.

“The town centre is seeing more than a £1 billion of investment, with the creation of Stockport 8, a brand-new town centre neighbourhood that will make up part of the Stockport MDC, the development of Stockport Interchange, and as the article mentions, the restoration of Weir Mill."

The article also declared Stockport to be home to some of the region’s ‘most interesting people’, noting that the town is gearing up to become one of ‘the coolest little corners of the country’.

It's great to see Stockport finally getting the recognition it deserves. Over the past few years, it has become a wonderful place to call home. Compared to the city centre, housing is affordable with excellent access to local amenities and great transport links, and a friendly community to boot. We've also seen an increase in successful, local businesses, with the article describing the borough as "a magnet for interesting independent businesses such as the much-lauded restaurant Where the Light Gets In, the indie bookshop Rare Mags and the Produce Hall food market."
